Dublin is simply made for Christmas.
Ireland truly flies its cosy flag during the winter months. Seeing as we spend most of our time curled up somewhere warm, we know a thing or two about creating a bit of ‘Hygge’ (cosy, contented mood evoked by comfort and conviviality).
The shop windows filled with Christmas lights, the music, the frequency of a Sunday roast, the music and the people all make Dublin feel extra special this time of year.
If you’re spending the festive season here, here are five things I’d recommend adding to your list, plus one extra if you fancy exploring beyond Dublin.

1. Explore the Dublin Loves Christmas Market
This market is a brilliant option for students because entry is completely free. You’ll find Bavarian-style stalls, rides, food, drinks and plenty of entertainment. It’s cheerful, busy and a great place to wander with friends after classes.
Location: Royal Dublin Society (RDS), Ballsbridge, Dublin 4
Dates: 15 November – 23 December
Best for: A Christmassy afternoon that doesn’t break the bank.
Tip: Weekday evenings tend to be quieter if crowds aren’t your thing.

2. See the Treetop Night Lights at Beyond the Trees, Avondale
If you’re looking for something a little magical, this is it. The treetop walk winds almost 40 metres above the forest in Wicklow, lit up with colourful Christmas lights. It’s peaceful, scenic and perfect for a weekend trip with friends. It feels like stepping into a winter fairytale!
Location: Beyond the Trees Avondale, Co. Wicklow
Dates: Selected evenings from mid-November to late January
Times: Typically 4pm–8pm (check their website for up-to-date schedules)
3. Visit The Fumbally Christmas Market
When the weather isn’t cooperating (which… is often), this indoor market is a lifesaver. Over three days, independent artists, crafters and traders fill The Fumbally with food, gifts and cosy festive energy. It’s ideal for picking up affordable, handmade gifts and the café and shop stay open too, so you’re guaranteed a good snack.
Location: The Fumbally, Dublin
Dates: 5th, 6th and 7th December
Times: 12pm–6pm

4. Experience TwinkleTown in Smithfield
This year, Smithfield Square transforms into TwinkleTown, Dublin’s newest Christmas experience. Expect an ice rink, food stalls, lights and plenty of festive activities. Because it’s in the city centre, it’s easy to get to, even after a long day on campus.
Location: Smithfield Square, Dublin 7
Dates: 28 November – 4 January
Why go: It has the buzz of a big Christmas festival without needing to trek across the city.
5. See the Wild Lights at Dublin Zoo
A proper Christmas staple. Every year, Dublin Zoo transforms into a glowing trail of lanterns, this time celebrating colour through the theme of Wild Kaleidoscope.
If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s one to experience at least once during your time in Dublin.
Location: Dublin Zoo, Phoenix Park
Dates: 6 November 2025 – 31 January 2026
Pro tip: Book early. Tickets sell out quickly, especially for evening slots.

Bonus: Galway Christmas Markets
I couldn’t resist adding this one. If you find yourself heading West during the holidays, the Galway Christmas Markets can’t go a miss! With over 50 wooden chalets, live music, food and crafts, it feels like stepping into a small Christmas village. It’s often considered one of the best Christmas markets in Ireland and for good reason.
Location: Eyre Square, Galway
Dates: 7th November 2025 – 31st December 2025
Final Thoughts
These are my top picks for things to do in Dublin at Christmas (plus one Galway detour for good luck!).
But honestly, some of the best festive moments here are the simplest: walking through Dublin’s streets lit up in warm colours, chatting with friends and holding a Butlers hot chocolate to keep your hands warm.
So, if funds are tight (which they usually are for us students!) know that you can still enjoy the Christmas spirit in Dublin!
Enjoy every moment, and have a magical Christmas! 🎄
