Considering the wide variety of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes offered by Trinity College Dublin, it can be challenging to figure out which course would best fit you and your needs. When I was contemplating where I should apply, I went through countless brochures and web pages, trying to gather as much information as possible.
The Global Business programme at Trinity College appealed to me greatly due to its holistic approach to business, however, I was still eyeing the other options. What sealed the deal for me were the insights of students who were either enrolled in the course at that time or had finished it recently.
Three years in, I want to share my thoughts with other prospective students and provide them with a good understanding of what they can expect.
What I liked about Global Business
The Global Business programme offers a comprehensive blend of theoretical knowledge and practical experience, designed to prepare students for the dynamic world of international business. It focuses on innovation, entrepreneurship, technology, communication, and management. Moreover, it gives undergraduates an opportunity to apply the concepts learned throughout the course in a real-world context, providing a solid foundation for aspiring business professionals.
Exchange Opportunities
What distinguishes Global Business from other similar courses is the fact that it grants students more control over what they will dedicate their time to, especially during their third and fourth years.
For example, you are eligible to go on an exchange or Erasmus programme during your penultimate year, but it is not a mandatory element of your degree (as compared to Business and a Language programme).
If you are unsure about spending a semester or two at a different university, you will have the chance to stay at Trinity College.
After your second year you are allowed to make your curriculum as multifaceted as possible. You can take modules in accounting, management, innovation, philosophy, marketing, finance, and sustainability at the same time, as long as you have the appropriate number of credits and your subjects don’t overlap.
International students & internship opportunities
Trinity College hosts students from all over the world — and the Global Business programme is not an exception. Collaborating with a diverse cohort of people from various cultural backgrounds can help nurture a better understanding of varying perspectives and build an international network.
Lastly, while finding internships and jobs can be exceptionally hard when you are a student, you can rest assured that the Business School will make the process easier. From workshops and interactive case studies to a constantly updated list of positions and career services, you will find yourself being supported throughout your journey.
What surprised me about Global Business at Trinity
While the web page is fairly comprehensive in its description of the different aspects of the Global Business programme, I was still pleasantly surprised by the strong encouragement of language learning. During the first and the second year of the course, students have the chance to learn one modern European language. Some languages are taught from scratch, whereas others require a certain level of proficiency.
Understandably, knowledge of foreign languages is crucial in the current globalized world, and it can be both challenging and rewarding for those who wish to work in international settings. Additionally, learning a language can add more diversity to your studies and give you a break from business modules.
I was intrigued by the diverse teaching methods employed by the professors and tutors that kept me engaged and prepared me for collaborative and practical problem-solving. Throughout the course, I experienced a mix of lectures, case studies, creative assignments, interviews, and team projects, simulating real-world business scenarios.
Course Work
Finally, the workload can get really overwhelming. While you will receive the necessary training in various fields of business, you might also feel a bit drained. I realized that to balance coursework, internships, work, and potential study abroad programmes, I needed to enhance my time management skills. Therefore, if you want to pursue Global Business, you have to be ready to commit significant effort to meet the demands of the course.

Upon careful consideration, I reckon that the Global Business programme can be for you if:
- You see yourself as an entrepreneur in the future who is looking to innovate and start their own venture. The course offers both a substantial theoretical foundation and numerous opportunities for the practical implementation of your creative ideas.
- You are passionate about not just business but also international relations, economics, sociology, and different cultures. You like to travel and are not afraid of challenges.
- You prefer flexibility over a strict structure in terms of what you want to learn. You thrive in dynamic environments and are open to diverse cultures, traditions, and ideas.
- You wish to try out different fields and figure out what appeals to you the most before focusing on something more specific.
