5 must visit theatres in the heart of Dublin

Are you a theatre lover? Do you want to watch extraordinary performances in Dublin?

The weather in Dublin is not always suitable for outdoor activities. Sometimes, instead of braving the cold, it can be great to just enjoy a musical or a dance drama in a warm theatre with your friends or family members. You can immerse yourselves in the world of art and exchange ideas with each other.

Below I will introduce you to five theatres at the city centre of Dublin, which are also close to the campus of Trinity College Dublin.

Abbey Theatre

Abbey Theatre is also known as the National Theatre of Ireland, which first opened to the public in 1904. In 1951, it moved from its original building because of a fire. Abbey theatre is one of the leading cultural institutions in Ireland, and also the nursery of many famous Irish playwrights, such as William Butler Yeats and Lady Gregory.

Recently, the play named Emma is shown at the theatre until January 25, 2025, which is adapted from the novel ‘Emma’ by Jane Austen.

Gaiety Theatre

The Gaiety Theatre was opened in 1871 with the decoration of a classical Victorian auditorium. It has provided an array of performances to the audience, but it specialises in operatic and musical productions.

You can enjoy a famous Irish show—Riverdance—here next summer! Riverdance consists mainly of traditional Irish music and dance, and it will return to the Gaiety Theatre from June 5th to September 7th, 2025, to celebrate its 30 breathtaking years.

Bord Gáis Energy Theatre

Bord Gáis Energy Theatre was opened in 2010. It is Ireland’s largest fixed-seat theatre, with a capacity of over two thousand people. Many famous West End shows have been shown in this theatre, including the musical Hamilton, which was staged here from September to November 2024.

If you have missed this one, don’t worry! There will be more famous and excellent shows next year. & Juliet, the winner of the Olivier Award, a new musical from the West End will come to  Bord Gáis Energy Theatre next February. Right after that, Chicago, the musical that has wrapped up a whole lot of awards, will be staged here. If you are interested in them, it is definitely a great opportunity you can’t miss!

Gate Theatre

The Gate Theatre was founded in 1928, which is an artist-led organisation producing original and world-class works. Many well-known actors and playwrights have been invited to perform or stage their works here, such as Samuel Beckett and Harold Pinter.

Samuel Beckett Theatre

The Samuel Beckett Theatre is named after one of the most famous and innovative playwrights in the 20th century. It is located on the campus of Trinity College Dublin, and it was opened in 1992 to celebrate the quatercentenary of Trinity College Dublin!

It hosts the productions of the School of Creative Arts in Trinity. It is also used for hosting tours of different performances. As a Trinity student, try to enjoy a show here!

Moreover, every September to October, the Annual Dublin Theatre Festival is held. Different kinds of performances and activities will take place in multiple theatres across the Dublin city. As a student, you can enjoy discounted fares!
