Your Guide to 24 Hours in Kilkenny

Kilkenny is one of those cities that grabs you the minute you arrive. It’s got this vibrant yet laid-back vibe that makes you feel like you’re experiencing the best of Irish culture, but with a twist that sets it apart from other Irish towns. If you’re planning a day trip, Kilkenny is perfect!

It’s small enough to see the main sights in a few hours, giving you ample time to explore the whole city at your leisure. I went with a friend, and I’d totally recommend doing the same. It’s easy to get to! Just hop on a train from Dublin Heuston Station, and you’ll be in Kilkenny in about two hours.

Plus, if you’re a student with a valid Leap Card, a round-trip ticket is only €12, which is a steal!

Now, let’s get into the three spots you absolutely need to check out while you’re there –

1. Visit the Farmers Market

Kick off your day at the Kilkenny Farmer’s Market, which takes place every Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Parade, right in front of Kilkenny Castle. This market is a local favourite, with about 20 stalls offering everything from fresh produce and artisan bread to handcrafted jewellery and skincare products.

The atmosphere is lively, with locals out with their families and pets, making it a perfect spot to soak in the community vibe. Make sure to grab a coffee and wander through the stalls, you’re bound to find something you love!

2. Kilkenny Castle

Next, head across the street to Kilkenny Castle. This iconic landmark is as impressive inside as it is outside. The castle dates back to the 12th century and has been beautifully restored. The surrounding parklands are perfect for a stroll or even just lounging on the grass if the weather’s good.

Inside, the castle is a journey through history. The grand drawing room is particularly stunning, with its elaborate decor and grand piano. It’s easy to imagine the elegant parties that must have taken place there.

The Long Gallery, filled with portraits of historical figures, is another highlight. The castle is open daily, with guided tours available, or you can explore it at your own pace.

3. Kilkenny Design Centre

Just across the road from the castle is the Kilkenny Design Centre, housed in the former stables of the castle. This shopping complex is a haven for anyone who loves unique, handcrafted items. From pottery and jewellery to candles and homeware, the Design Centre offers a curated selection of Irish-made goods.

If you have time, check out one of the workshops that are sometimes held here, like candle or soap-making. Even if you’re just window shopping, the scents and sights inside are a treat in themselves. And of course, it’s the perfect place to pick up a souvenir or two!

Conclusion

After a morning of exploring you’ll be ready for a bite to eat. There are plenty of cosy cafés and restaurants nearby where you can grab lunch and reflect on your day. By the time you’re heading back to Dublin, you’ll have a real sense of Kilkenny’s charm and you’ll probably be planning your next visit!

Kilkenny is one of those places that’s easy to fall in love with. Whether you’re into history, shopping, or just soaking up the local culture, there’s something for everyone. So, grab a friend, hop on a train, and enjoy a perfect day in Kilkenny!
