My favourite things about being a Trinity Global Ambassador

As a final year student in Trinity, it is safe to say that I have had a variety of jobs during my four years at this university – with none, let me assure you, being half as enjoyable as being a Global Room student ambassador.

In this blog, I want to tell you about the best parts about my time in the Global Room, and the subsequent learnings I have taken away from the role.

The Global Room Atmosphere

The Global Room is without a doubt a versatile and interesting space; but, nestled away in the Hamilton building next to the Academic Registry, it may appear initially unassuming.

The moment you step into the space, you find yourself transported into another place entirely. I often tend to forget I’m still on campus. From a plethora of brightly coloured chairs and posters to a screen that broadcasts channels from all over the world, the Global Room feels like a home away from home.

There is space for everyone in the Global Room, and being able to make the Global Room a welcoming, inclusive, and lively social space is one of the reasons I love my job.

It enables me to not only meet people from all over the world but to bring all students together in a common space where they can get to know each other and form lifelong friendships.

The icing on the cake? It is a place for students run by students, supported by our phenomenal management team and of course Ambassasorus (or Amby)!

Undertaking Projects

I often say that I’m the type of person who needs to have something new happening every day. I’m notoriously bad at sitting still and having a job where I can come into work not knowing what to expect is something which brings me great excitement – which is why my role as a Global Ambassador fits me like a glove.

Each shift presents the opportunity to enact a new project, meet a new person, and make a difference within the wider Trinity community. As someone who is very proactive and eager to do work that makes a difference, the chance to undertake and manage various student-centric projects is something which really motivates me and pushes me to work harder.

In my time working at the Global Room, I have had the opportunity to organise a wide range of projects and events such as a Festive Jumper Day and a Pancake Day event.

Additionally, I served as a project manager of New2Dublin, a Global Room run initiative, during both academic terms. This allowed me to develop both my leadership and communication skills while running events that helped international students acclimatise to Dublin easier and make the most of their time abroad.

A job in the Global Room as a student ambassador is certainly a far cry from your average nine to five, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Engaging in Social Media Projects

One of the best parts of my job is the opportunity to create engaging and interesting content for our social media pages. From taking Amby on outings around campus to crafting posters to pop up around the space, Global Ambassadors have endless opportunities to channel our creativity and think of interesting content ideas.

Not only that, we also get the chance to develop our social media management, creative marketing, graphic design and videography skills too – what isn’t there to love?

Welcoming International Students

As someone born in Lithuania but who has spent the majority of her life abroad, the one thing that has consistently brought me joy at Trinity is the opportunity to connect with local and international students.

The Global Room serves as the first point of contact for all students arriving at Trinity, and acts as a bridging point for students seeking to make friends during their time in college.

Through my work on Global Room student initiatives, I was able to not only help new students settle into life in Ireland – but also show them everything there is to love about Ireland!

The Friends you Make

As cheesy and cliché as this may sound, sometimes it really isn’t about the destination but the journey.

Throughout my time in the Global Room, I have worked with the most amazing people and made friends for life.

From chats over tea to our staff meeting dinners, the memories I have made with my Global Room family are something I will cherish in the years to come

Being a part of something bigger

Working in the Global Room I have never felt like I am alone. Rather, I take comfort in knowing that my work in the Global Room office enables me to assist other departments when it comes to engaging with the wider community.

From being to help out with university open days to giving campus tours to prospective students, working in the Global Room really makes me feel that I’m part of something bigger and that the work I am doing makes a difference.
